Achieving the Dream Through Education Charity understands success is not defined by academic achievement, rather by personal growth and development. With a holistic, child-centred approach, Achieving the Dream Through Education provides Matawa youth and children with unique opportunities that bridge the gap for them to achieve their biggest dreams. Scholarships, bursaries, and awards have been created with the goal of supporting Matawa youth as they navigate their path through elementary school, secondary school, and beyond.

2023 Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards will be granted to the winning recipients in June 2023.

DESCRIPTION
The Bonnie Moore and Blanche Swalwell Sister’s Bursary was created and funded by Bonnie Moore and Blanche Swalwell, who, as sisters, are strong supporters of Matawa youth. They understand the varying career pathways and demands needed to be successful in any occupation. Ms. Moore and Ms. Swalwel are passionate about supporting students in realizing their dreams after high school.

REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for the Bonnie Moore and Blanche Swalwell Sisters Bursary, youth must meet the following requirements:

  • A graduating student who is beginning their journey into the workplace. Funding must be used for workplace supplies, such as clothing, PPE, work boots, tools, cooking supplies, etc.
  • Must indicate how the purchase of items will lead to success in the workplace.
  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial support.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a high school.
  • Based on financial need.

Examples include:

  • Personal knives are needed to be a Chef.
  • A high-quality camera is required in order to be a Photographer.
  • Proper PPE (personal protective equipment) is required in order to be a Welder.

DESCRIPTION

The Jamie Campbell Bursary is awarded to a student who is pursuing their dreams through post-secondary education.  Mr. Jamie Campbell, a sportscaster for Rogers Sportsnet and the Toronto Blue Jays Central show host, created the bursary.  He made the Jamie Campbell Bursary in 2018 to support Matawa Education & Care Centre students wanting to pursue their dreams after high school.  He raised the money for the bursary by selling individual sports cards from his collection.  Mr. Jamie Campbell strongly supports Matawa youth and is equally passionate about helping students in realizing their dreams after high school.

REQUIREMENTS

Eligible Jamie Campbell Bursary must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial support.
  • Applicant must be enrolled at the Matawa Education and Care Centre. 
  • Based on financial need.

DESCRIPTION
The Courage (Alex Missewace) Bursary was created and funded by the staff of Matawa Education as a gift to the Executive Director of Education, Sharon Nate.  The donation was made to show sincere appreciation for Ms. Nate’s endless dedication and leadership to Matawa Education, students, and the Matawa First Nations.  More importantly, the donation is to signify a community of courage as Ms. Nate’s brother, Alex Missewace, battles cancer.

Intending to raise funds, the Matawa Education staff wanted the bursary to be awarded to a student who demonstrates courage, strength, and perseverance during trying times, as Alex continues to do.

REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for the Courage (Alex Missewace) Bursary, youth must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial support.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a high school.
  • Based on financial need.

DESCRIPTION
Tanya Talaga is an Ojibwe author and journalist with roots in Fort William First Nation in Ontario, Canada. She worked as a journalist at the Toronto Star for over twenty years and has been nominated five times for the Michener Award in public service journalism. Tanya is the acclaimed author of Seven Fallen Feathers and has donated funds from book sales to Matawa youth graduating from the Matawa Education and Care Centre.

REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for the Tanya Talaga Bursary, youth must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial support.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a high school.
  • Based on financial need.

The Colliers Project Leaders Scholarship was created and funded through Colliers Project Leaders, who strongly support Matawa youth. Colliers Project Leaders continue to help students realize their dreams of post-secondary education.

REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for the Colliers Project Leaders Scholarship, youth must meet the following requirements:

  • A graduating student who is beginning their post-secondary pathway.
  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and/or excellence.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a high school and have received acceptance into a recognized post-secondary program in Canada.

The Gord Wickham Scholarship is funded by Mr. Gord Wickham, who strongly supports post-secondary education for Matawa youth and supports students in realizing their dreams of post-secondary education.

  • A graduating student who is beginning their post-secondary pathway.
  • Applicant must be a member of a Matawa First Nation.
  • Applicant must be considered a ‘youth’.
  • Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and/or excellence.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a high school and have received acceptance into a recognized post-secondary program in Canada.

Indigenous Youth Need Your Support! – Providing indigenous youth with financial assistance to access their dream through education.
