Canoeing From One Matawa First Nation To Another Each Summer

In July 2018 Matawa students aged 15-20 participated in a 2 week long Grade 12 credit where they paddled 240 km along the Kitchi Siipi (Albany River). Matawa students guided by Matawa Education and care Centre’s Outdoor Education teacher, professional river guides and a Matawa community guide and knowledge keeper went from Eabametoong First Nation to Marten Falls First Nation. Preparation for the canoe trip included 3 days of hands on training on the Kaministiiqua River where students learned canoeing, canoe rescues, swimming in rapids and team roles.
